According to her post, her mother was initially informed that the business class seat wouldn’t decline. However, later told that it was reserved for the crew. Subsequently, she found another passenger with a seat designated for her mother. On the other hand, she was being sent to economy class. The ground staff in Delhi even threatened to remove her luggage from the plane if she didn’t follow the rules. This incident has sparked discussions about Airline Refund policies, passenger rights, and Compensation Policies.

Concerns about airline downgrading raised by passengers

Saumya Brajmohan expresses that airlines sometimes downgrade passengers. Further, shifting them to a lower class during check-in. This is due to reasons such as unserviceable seats, change of aircraft, or overbooking. In such scenarios, the DGCA has implemented compensation policies to provide reimbursement to passengers. This is for those who have involuntarily been downgraded.

She posted on X, “@airindia, how dare you give my mom’s business class seat to someone else on a long-haul flight from Delhi to Washington DC? First, telling her the seat doesn’t recline, then says the seat is for the crew, and then she finds someone else sitting there as she is sent to the economy. A business seat was clearly indicated on Mom’s boarding pass. My mother who has health issues and paid a higher fare to travel in comfort was actually told by the Delhi ground staff that her luggage would be taken off the plane if she didn’t simply take the economy seat.”

Passenger Downgrade Leads to Compensation

For domestic flights, 75% of the ticket cost, including taxes, is to be compensation. On the other hand, for international flights, the percentages solely depend on the distance traveled. Suppose passengers feel not satisfied with the rules. They are advised to file a complaint with the Air Sewa App or Portal. Somehow, it still remains unresolved. Then, passengers can approach the consumer forum for further action.

After following the woman’s public complaint, the airline eventually compensated her mother. They provide a reimbursing 75% of the fare. Later, provide an upgrade voucher. However, the woman expressed her dissatisfaction with the ground staff’s behavior in Delhi. She insisted that her mother, listed as a business class passenger, shouldn’t be downgraded to economy class. The reimbursement/compensation policies  may not apply in the latter case. Nevertheless, the DGCA has not laid out specific guidelines for involuntary downgrading.  It still leaves uncertainty in such situations.

Airlines are expected to handle the situation, before downgrading a passenger. This way, it will show transparency and fairness in the process. Passengers can seek justice if they believe that they have been unfairly downgraded. This aims to receive some compensation and remedies for any inconvenience.
