Milkha lost his family members, including his parents, a brother, and two sisters. His father’s final words were “Bhaag Milkha” [Run Milkha].

In 1947, Hindus and Sikhs were being persecuted and killed in Punjab. Milkha fled to Delhi to his sister Iswar Kaur. Such a terrible incident in his childhood put him in some unfavorable company, and for some time, he started robbing people. But his sister supports him and saves him from this situation. He made his debut as a race athlete at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics but did not win any awards. However, his appearance in the final of the 400-meter event demonstrated his potential as an athlete and was the beginning of his journey.

The 1958 Commonwealth Games in Cardiff was a defining moment for him as he won his first gold medal in the 440 yards (now 400 meters). This Commonwealth Games has a huge historical impact as it represents the Indian imprint on the global athletics stage. Milkha Singh was famous as “Flying Sikh” because of his amazing speed.

One of the most memorable achievements was during the 1960 Rome Olympics, where he impressed the world with his running skills and made the final of the 400-meter event. In the final, one of the greatest moments was when he faced American sprinter Otis Davis. Still, one of the greatest moments in Olympic history. Although Milkha missed out on winning a medal in that race by a narrow margin and finished fourth, the race-inspired millions of people and touched their hearts.

In 1958, Milkha Singh won the gold medal in the 200-meter race and 400-meter race at the Asian Games. In the same year, he also won a gold medal in the 440-yard race at the Commonwealth Games. 1959, he was awarded the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian award, for his sporting achievement.

In 1962, Milkha Singh continued to excel in the field of athletics, winning gold medals in the 400 m race and 4 x 400 m relay race at the Asian Games. In 1964, he won a silver medal in the 400-meter race at the Calcutta National Games.
