Since 23 March 2020, international passenger flights in India have been suspended due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This ban is still in effect till 28 February 2022. But India is likely to allow international flights from the middle of March as the aviation ministry has pursued the approval from Health Minister for it. Due to the prevailing situation of Covid-19 across the globe, the approval from Health Ministry is compulsory. Regular international flights are likely to resume from March 15 and will follow standard operating procedures effective at Indian airports for foreign departures and arrivals. So book air tickets from USA to India with Flyopedia now as India’s domestic traffic has rebounded fast and a decision is needed to be taken for resumption of international flights.
However, no official announcement is yet made by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation so far.
The guidelines for international arrivals which came into effect on 14 February, will be followed at airports for the foreign travelers of these flights. Special passenger flights have been functioning between India and other 40 countries during the pandemic under Air Bubble Arrangements.
The aviation ministry will resume the international flights after the capacity offered by domestic flights reach 80%. Indian airlines used to operate 2,800 flights at their peak before Covid-19 and have already breached 80% of those numbers last week. Domestic passenger numbers have also rebounded at an incredible speed, on Sunday, Indian Airlines operated 2335 flights and carried 343,000 passengers on them.
Last year in November the Aviation Ministry had announced the plans to resume international flights but that order was rescinded due to the new variant of Covid-19: Omicron. But as the third wave of pandemic abates, India announced to drop negative Covid-19 test result requirement and compulsory quarantine for fully vaccinated travelers arriving from 82 countries. This initiative was appreciated by the industry all around the world and was seen as the prelude to the opening of the country. Airline Industry sources say that it is the perfect time for the country to open as countries all around the world are also opening.
Taking this step at such an early stage ensures that flights from India will be easily accepted by these countries too or one would have to wait for other countries to launch flights but that will be a very late step for the advancement of the aviation industry in India.
