Everything About The New Electronic Device Restrictions
What has happened that made passengers face these restrictions now?
For all direct passenger flights to the UK from Jordan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Turkey and Tunisia, the UK government has announced a cabin ban for all electronic devices larger than a smartphone. But you can carry it in your checked baggage.
This move was first made by the US Government on March 20 and since then, other European countries may be following it. According to the statement issued by the transport secretary, Chris Grayling:
“We understand the frustration that these measures may cause and we are working with the aviation industry to minimise any impact. Our top priority will always be to maintain the safety of British nationals. People should continue to fly and comply with security procedures.”
According to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO):
“There is a heightened risk of terrorism against aviation. The threat is constantly evolving and we must respond accordingly.”
What airlines are affected by these new restrictions?
These restrictions affect 8 Turkish and Middle Eastern airlines along with 6 UK carriers. These include
- British Airways
- easyJet
- Jet2
- Thomson Airways
- Turkish Airlines
Airlines which fail in following these restrictions will be banned from flying to the UK. However, none of them apply when you check out flight fare from USA to India on Flyopedia, so do that and get great discounts for your next vacation!

Which items in the electronic devices category are not allowed on flights’ cabins anymore?
These are the items not allowed on a flight’s cabin when flying to the UK.
- Laptops
- Cameras
- E – Readers / Tablets / Kindles
- Electronic game units larger than a smartphone
- Portable DVD players
- Travel printers / Scanners
What will happen when you go on a holiday?
If you go on a holiday to any of the countries we mentioned above, your flight to your destination would be unaffected. The restrictions would only apply when you return from these countries to the UK.
Then, you need to ensure that all electronic devices larger than a normal smartphone need to be packed into your checked in baggage and stored in the flight’s hold. If not, you will not be allowed to take the device(s) with you.
Are electronic devices covered by your insurance?
Generally, even if your checked baggage is lost, you would not be receiving compensation for electronic devices. Or your insurance may feature single item limits, which offers a low compensation for only one electronic item.
Since the compensation is very low, we recommend getting a separate gadget insurance that covers all your electronic devices, to be on the safe side.
