- AirAsia India
AirAsia’s management stated in October 2012 that they would want to expand their presence in India provided the aviation environment and tax structure were favorable and supportive of low-cost airline operations with cheap international flight tickets. The airline CEO Tony Fernandes tweeted, “Fantastic news that India has opened up investments to international airlines,” in response to the new Indian government’s decision to allow up to 49% foreign direct investment in the aviation sector. He stated that it was now simpler for him to establish an airline in India. Tony Fernandes referred to the collaboration with Tata Sons. He stated that the Tatas are well-known in India and have a wonderful reputation. A tie-up that works well. Fernandes stated that he will focus on the one million south Indians who commute by train.
On February 19, 2013, AirAsia launched its Indian low-cost affiliate airline. The airline would be run as a joint venture, with AirAsia owning 49% of the company. Arun Bhatia acquired 21% of the airline, with Tata Sons owning the remaining 30%. The joint venture will also signal Tata Sons’ comeback to the aviation business after a 60-year absence. AirAsia is the first international airline to establish an associate airline in India. The airline is based in Chennai and intends to use Chennai International Airport as its hub. The airline’s principal hub was then relocated to Kempegowda International Airport in Bangalore. On June 12, 2014, AirAsia’s India operation launched its first flight on the Bangalore-Goa route.
The airline declared that Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi will be its North Indian base for international tourists, particularly Americans booking cheap flight tickets to Delhi From USA.
