Tata Sons recently acquired Air India back from the Indian Government after 69 years, and the Indian Government is about to start regular international flights from Indian airports from March 27 onwards. Also, the current Russian-Ukrainian war has disrupted global airline operations. Air India is excited to expand its flights in operations, flight routes, and destinations, especially in the USA, with all these incidents taking place. This will allow travelers to book air tickets from USA to India and vice-versa from different destinations.
In 1932, Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata (JRD Tata) founded Air India, known as Tata Airlines, at that time. JRD Tata is also the first chairman of the Tata Group. In 1947, the Indian Government took 49% of the company stakes and nationalized Tata Airlines, and Tata Airlines became Air India.
In 2022, Tata Group acquired Air India back with a winning bid of Rs. 18,000 crores. Tata paid Rs. 2,700 crores in cash and will take Rs. 15,300 crores as debt. Acquiring the company was completed on January 27, 2022.
Tata Group has not announced the new CEO for Air India till now. Natarajan Chandrasekaran, the current chairperson of Tata Sons, is appointed as the chairperson of Air India as well on March 14, 2022. Until the new CEO of Air India is appointed, Natarajan Chandrasekaran and five core committee members of Tata will lead the operations of Air India.
Natarajan Chandrasekaran has assured that they will bring multiple developments in Air India, and Air India will reclaim the past glory of its ‘Maharaja Hospitality.’ Earlier the hospitality of Air India used to differentiate them from all other national and international airlines.
Air India will add many new aircraft in operations, will travel through more routes and many more destinations. Tata Group focuses on providing the best in class customer service in Air India and making it the most technologically advanced airline. Tata is also looking forward to upgrading and modernizing the fleet and hospitality of their airline, both in-flight and off-flight.
India is going to restart international flights again from March 27, 2022. The Indian Government is looking to increase foreign traveling from and to India to encourage the growth of the tourism industry again. On February 14, considering the active vaccination drive and declining COVID cases, India has eased international traveling with new guidelines. These new guidelines eliminate the need for seven days of home quarantine after arrival to India. Currently, you can either upload your double vaccination certificates or bring an RT-PCR test taken 72 hours before the flight.
The current Russian-Ukrainian war is disturbing the airline industry all across the globe, and the war has forced many airlines to take longer routes to reach their destinations. Therefore, the fuel rates and operational costs of these airlines are increasing. Some popular airlines like United Airlines and others are relaxing their flight operations for some time. Tata Group is observing this scenario and will soon start more routes and destinations for Air India.
According to sources, Singapore Airlines is open to the idea of a merger between Vistara and Air India. Vistara Airlines is a joint venture between Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines, and SIA holds a 49% stake in Vistara.
Tata will make things much more exciting for foreign travelers with their plans and new upgrades in Air India. We hope to see the popular Air India Maharaja ad campaign again.
